Dabei wurde die alte Zählung mit eckigen Klammern markiert. Sie entstanden vermutlich zwischen dem 26.05.1876 (dem Erscheinungstermin des erwähnten Beitrags von Klein; siehe nächste Erläuterung) und dem 19.08.1877, als Fontane seiner Frau Emilie Fontane über die Figur des Dr. Wilhelm Brose schrieb: „Der neue Roman gestaltet sich zwar mehr und mehr und seit heute früh erfreut es mich, daß eine Hauptgestalt darin ganz allmählig die Gestalt unsres lieben kleinen Merckel angenommen hat“; vgl. <bibl><ptr target="lit:FEF_3"/><citedRange>Nr. 83, S. 49</citedRange>.</bibl> Fontanes Notiz zu seinem geplanten Roman „Allerlei Glück“ zeigt, dass spätstens 1877 die Figur des Wilhelm Brose als Bruder des Heinrich Brose entstanden ist. Ursprünglich hatte Fontane vorgesehen, Dr. Broses Nachbarn, „de[n] eigentliche[n] Held[en]“, mit dem Beowulf-Thema in Verbindung zu bringen („Beeowulf-Mann“); vgl. <bibl><ptr target="lit:Fragmente_1"/><citedRange>S. 105</citedRange></bibl>.</note>

    <note type="editorial" target="#B04_54r_k">Vermutlich hatte Fontane Walter Scotts "Der Alterthümler" in der deutschen Übersetzung von Benno Tschischwitz gelesen, die 1876 bei Grote in Berlin erschienen war; vgl. XXX http://reader.digitale-sammlungen.de/de/fs1/object/display/bsb11335916_00236.html. In seinem Tagebuch notierte Fontane im Abschnitt zu 1877, dass er in Thale „um 5 Uhr Nachmittags“ im „Waldkater“,  um „W. Scott zu lesen und zwar den ‚Alterthümler‘. Meine Begeisterung war anfand die alte; es zieht sich aber doch ein Element des Oberflächichen, des zu leicht-nehmens beim Arbeiten durch alle seine Produktion hindurch und vieles ist geradezu gehuschelt. Nur sein seltenes Talent und vielleicht noch mehr seine niedagewesene persönliche Liebenswürdigkeit (die sich in allem wiederspiegelt) lassen über diese Fluddrigkeiten hinwegsehn.
